Eagles Nest National School
S N NAOMH BRID
Our history
The school opened on February 1st 1880. Before Eagle's Nest, the area had several schools, including a mission school that stood for thirty years. The idea for a school at the foot of Letter Hill was first proposed in 1876.
Founding:
The Blakes, a local family, supported the construction of Eagle's Nest. The school was built for £304, with £100 raised locally.
Name:
The school's name is thought to be related to the presence of eagles in the area, with the final wild eagles in Ireland disappearing around 1912.
Original Location:
The school was initially located on land granted by the Blakes in Cloonluane, with a lease for 99 years.
Closure and Relocation:
The original building was eventually replaced by a new school in the 1960s, which was located in a more central location.
Continuing Legacy:
The school, though relocated, continues to serve the community, and its history remains a significant part of the Renvyle area.
